Decorah is located in the far northeastern corner of Iowa. Known for its Scandinavian, and especially its Norwegian heritage, Decorah hosts its annual Nordic Fest, held the last full weekend in July. Nordic Fest draws up to 50,000 people every year.

First-time Visitors are pleasantly surprised by the thriving downtown businesses, numerous services offered and wide variety of restaurants within our area. Decorah works hard to maintain it's status as a major trade center for this Beautiful corner of Northeast Iowa and Visitors routinely guess our population is double what is shown by the Census Bureau. Winneshiek County, Decorah, and Northeast Iowa, also attract many people for the available recreational activities: You can rent bikes for the weekend and travel on the Prairie Farmer trail ( http://www.inhf.org/iowatrails/prairie-intro.htm ) between Calmar and Ridgeway or rent a cross country ski package for the family during the winter months to cruise around the wooded parks. Decorah has a good start on mapped trails through our parks and public woodlands, a paved trail system looping most of the northern side of town and trail expansions/additions being planned to complete a 12 mile bike loop around Decorah(http://www.trailsofwinneshiek.org/ ) . Canoe the scenic Upper Iowa River; hike hilly and wooded trails; rent a horse for the afternoon (trail guides are an option at a B&B and a private farm trail) or, just relax in any of the county or city parks and camping facilities. Decorah offers three scenic golf courses, with others in Calmar and Ossian. Fish the Winneshiek County streams for Brown, Rainbow and even Brook trout or the cold-water rivers in northeast Iowa. Hunting many forms of game (except bear and elk) makes Winneshiek County and the public hunting lands a "must hunt" on your list. Luther College offers events, activities and recitals throughout the year that are available to the public and Luther College is working on a large wind turbine project as part of its commitment to "going Green" along with recycling the fryer oil from the food service into a fuel for the campus vehicles and many upgrades throughout the campus to enhance energy efficiencies and lower the overall carbon footprint of the campus. The first-ever weekend "Green" event with an expo at our fairgrounds, off-grid home and organic farm tours for our county was a huge success ( http://www.digindecorah.com/ ) and plans are underway for the 2nd DIGIN next year promoting "green" ideas.

Decorah is home to the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, the largest ethnic museum of its kind in the United States, which is the site of numerous year ‘round educational activities along with 3 other museums within our county including the only childhood home of Laura Ingalls Wilder, still in its original location.

The Winneshiek Medical Center is located in Decorah and has a working contract with Mayo Clinic of Rochester, Minnesota. The Medical Center features at least 1 doctor on staff 24 / 7 for ER treatments. This feature is not found in any other surrounding county hospital. A Heliport pad allows transport of severe cases by air transport to Rochester or LaCrosse for critical care / specialized surgeries. Gunderson Clinic of La Crosse, Wisconsin also has a new, well-staffed and well-equipped clinic here in Decorah. Decorah has been approved for a new VA clinic and it should be running by the end of 2010.
